The Roman Abramovich era established Chelsea as one of the league’s powerhouse clubs. In due time the concept of ambition would shift towards a set standard of excellence. The philosophy was simple: Win and if not we’ll find someone else who will. Over the course of his ownership, we saw 13 managers come and go. Despite the constant ins and outs, the club saw fortune to the eighteen major trophies.
The Boehly administration attempted to take a different turn, in an effort to establish stability and commitment towards the future. We have seen an abundance of money invested into potential and a call for patience as the players continue to mature through in game experience. Yet with four managers within the last two years, their actions seemingly contradict their intentions.
Enzo Maresca could very well be the manager to steer the ship. Having served as an assistant under Pep Guardiola and having led Leicester City back into the Premier League there is a lot to be intrigued of, but yet again it is, but a game of potential. Maresca has no top flight experience, let alone with a club with an established standard of excellence.
It was only a few years ago, the club hoisted their second Champions League trophy, and as they enter this season, they’ll have Conference League football to look forward to. The goal should be simple, get back into the top four. If anything is to divert them from this goal, talent shouldn’t be one of them. We saw the team make great leaps towards the close of the previous season and the hope will be that the momentum is carried on valor as they open the season against the reigning champions.
